A Month Full of Celebrations

We went to check out Tarpit on La Brea on my birthday. Drinks were pretty good, but food wasn't so good. We tried the duck burger, meatballs with hominy, and tuna tartare- the only thing that was less than mediocre was the duck burger and that was only because it was served on a brioche bun slathered in butter, everything else sucked. Don't go to Tarpit for the food, just go there for drinks, ambiance and if you want to run into Penn Badgley smelling like weed from the Gossip Girls.

I turned 29 this month...I don't know about you, but I'm not really big on birthdays. They're just not the same as childhood birthdays.

food, food, food

  1. Rice flavored with sushi vinegar powder, sesame oil, and furikake seasoning eaten with roasted seaweed and kimchi
  2. Favorite snack from the OT snack room, Kashi crunch protein bar- this is damn good
My posts are usually about food, and this can seem redundant, but I can't help it...my life revolves around food. I love eating, I love cooking, I love looking at recipes and pictures of food and I LOVE reading through an entire cookbook page by page. You can expect to see a food magazine or a cookbook on my bedside table.

People told me that I would automatically lose some weight once I started school...umm, not if you're going to an OT program where you participate in 2 cultural food events and  your sweet teacher brings brownies and shortbread cookies and your awesome classmates bring you lollipops, chocolate bars, chocolate covered nuts, chocolates for Easter, and the list goes on...if anything I gained weight!

Meatless Wednesday

I'm trying to be more mindful about what I eat and how it impacts the earth. I don't claim to be an expert on sustainability/ eco-friendly living or try to impose it on anyone, but I have learned a few things living in San Francisco for 2 years and I intend to do what I can.

Here's what I ate today:
  • Breakfast: Barbara's Bakery Puffins cereal, slice of toast (no picture)
  • Snack: Quinoa with roasted beets
  • Lunch: MorningStar veggie patty with red leaf lettuce, kimchi and red pepper bean paste, pickled garlic cloves (I ate it Korean lettuce wrap style- it wasn't that good)
  • Snack: Japanese rice crackers
  • Dinner: Lentil soup, toast (no picture)

Time Flies By When You're Having Fun

 1. French toast made by Tim, 2. The surprise photo album Tim made for me <3 3. Cupcakes from Frosted Cupcakery, 4. Closeup of the Caramel Toffee Chocolate cupcake

I can't believe it's already a year since Tim and I got married. It feels like we got married just a couple months ago. Looking back on our first year together as a married couple, Tim and I just laughed our way through the first year. He manages to make me laugh every single day and I thank him for that, because we all need a little bit of laughter in our lives. Today when we told some people that we met for the first time that it was our 1 year wedding anniversary, they all said the exact same things. First thing they said was, "congratulations, you made it through your first year". The second thing they said was, "yeah we could tell you're newlyweds because you're still smiling, wait till you have kids...". I know they were partially joking, but I hope that Tim and I are still smiling after 10, 30, 40 years of marriage and although I may sound like an optimist when I say this, but I really believe that we'll still be smiling and happy that God brought us together.

I have come to realize that we aren't the "fun" couple, meaning we don't go out to clubs or go drinking with our friends every weekend. We're not the life of the party or pump loud music throughout our apartment. We have fun by running together, going grocery shopping, cooking, running errands, going to the nursery and looking at the different succulents (ok, maybe this is just my interest), anyway...our "fun" I guess is the kind of fun you would expect an older couple would be doing, people that have been married for awhile. I think a lot of it has to do with personality, because I am an introvert and I tend to find comfort in smaller group settings rather than large groups. I also like peace and quiet whereas my neighbor upstairs is always blasting music whenever she's home (btw, she has pretty good taste in music). Well, I suppose I'll end this post here...I don't have anything more to say. =)

Eight Miles

Wow, I can't believe we ran 8 miles on Saturday because even running 3 miles is hard for me, but to run 8 miles?! Crazy. Couple days ago I watched a documentary about the Kona Ironman World Championship and when I saw the different stories that led each participant to the championship, I was moved to tears. There was a story of a woman who suffered a stroke and was left with partial paralysis throughout her body, a man who is 78 years old that was competing in his 20th Ironman race, a man that lost his leg and was running with a special prosthesis- these are just a few of the many stories behind these athletes. It made me reevaluate my inner strength and mental fitness. I realized that I'm pretty weak and often don't push myself to my full potential. Running is hard, but I think that 80 percent of it is mental and so with new determination I set out to complete 8 miles.  As hard as it was, it was totally manageable. Maybe it was the cliff shot that I took before I ran, but I'd like to think that it was a new mindset and attitude that helped me that day.

After the run, Tim made an awesome breakfast sandwich consisting of an egg omelet (green onions, feta cheese, cheddar cheese) and black forest ham. I made the fruit smoothie (6 frozen strawberries, handful of frozen blueberries, one banana, one kiwi and one peach flavored yogurt drink). I encourage everyone to make fruit smoothies at home. I might have said this before in a previous blog entry, but it tastes very similar to Jamba juice without the extra calories of sherbet ice cream and you save money too, because these days it'll cost you 4 dollars minimum for a 16 oz smoothie at Jamba.

Food Trucks

1. Cart for a Cause, 2. Menu for the day, 3. Black cod w/butter lettuce and sushi roll, 4. Food trucks, 5. Fruit stand, 6. A piece of history- Berlin wall, 7. Hot pink flags

Food trucks originally came about to service construction workers, but now they're everywhere and during lunch time you can find up to 5-6 food trucks lined up on miracle mile. You can try Mediterranean, Japanese, fusion, Korean, bbq, dessert, burgers, grilled cheese, tacos, all along mid-Wilshire. Yesterday, my friend Jamie and I went to check out Cart for a Cause, a philanthropic food truck where 100% of net proceeds go directly to feed the needy- how awesome is that? That day, Nobu teamed up with Cart for a cause and offered several meal options, which you can see in the picture above. We all opted for the black cod lettuce wrap with a 6 piece sushi roll. Along with the meal, we got a free cookie, a bag of nuts and a drink, to go with the meal. I didn't realize that drinks were included, so I didn't get my pom drink =(, oh well.
